Glorifying God Through Athletic Competition
The ‘07-‘08 season
has been the Wesley College Warriors’ toughest schedule
in many years – consisting of 13 NAIA Division One
games, two NCAA Division Two games, one NCAA Division
Three game and one NCCAA Division Two game. During the regular season, the Warriors
defeated Tougaloo College (NAIA D1) and lost to Belhaven
College (NAIA D1) by 9 points and then by 2 points
on a shot at the buzzer. They also lost to Mississippi
College (NCAA D3), a perennial D3 powerhouse, by only
4 points. The Warriors played #17 ranked Texas-Wesleyan
University (NAIA D1) to within 3 points and lost to
Pensacola Christian (NCCAA D1) by a single point on
a last second shot.
Even with this tough
schedule, the Warriors
achieved the first undefeated regional record in
school history (14-0 in NCCAA South Region). They were ranked
nationally in the top 5 for the entire season and held
the #1 spot for four weeks. With a first-round
bye and the #1 seed in the South Regional Tournament,
the Warriors slipped up to tournament host Clearwater
Christian 74-88 in the Semi-Finals and fell short of
their goal to repeat as South Regional Champions.
With a renewed fight
and energy the Warriors were able to get one of the four
at-large bids given for the National Tournament. Wesley
College entered the
National Tournament, hosted
by Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri,
as the #8 seed. They lost a double-overtime thriller
to Southwestern Christian University in the first round.
